Uterqüe, the pretty girl and the most luxurious brand of the Inditex group, closes its physical stores, as indicated by the group today in its half-year results report. The brand will not disappear and will be integrated into Massimo Dutti: within its website and in some selected physical stores.
Born in 2008, the brand with the umlaut (which no one knew how to pronounce) reached the most elite streets and shopping centers to make high-quality leather bags, shoes and accessories. Thus, in July of that year we saw how Inditex took a step towards the world of quality fashion and the mastigge concept: luxury brands accessible to the upper middle class. He soon began to diversify and introduced the clothing collection. In the year 2020 it had 89 points of sale, 82 in 2021.
Uterqüe is the brand with the lowest turnover of the giant Inditex: 48 million euros in the first half of 2021. It is also the most daring and fashionista brand of all and with the highest average prices. At least when it appeared on the market, because in these years Massimo Dutti, who made more traditional fashion, has been increasing the quality of his leather goods, his coats and luxury products, dangerously approaching the prices of what he now endorses: Uterqüe. Fashion experts have spoken on numerous occasions about the complicated coexistence of both brands as if it were a Game of Thrones.
Although Uterqüe has grown in turnover compared to 2020 (31 million euros in the semester of last year, 48 million this year), luck is out, and today its closure as an independent store and brand is announced. The group does not want to give up the strength of the brand that has been building for so long and ensures that the design teams will be integrated into Massimo Dutti and its buyers will continue to find clothing and accessories on the website and in some Massimo Dutti stores.
And this reminds us of another conversation this morning in the Trendencias team: today we see coats at Zara at prices that we would not believe just a few years ago. Specifically, the leather jacket from the Kassl collection that costs 499 euros has caught the attention of buyers and the newsroom. The first step towards luxury was taken by Uterqüe, but it seems that Inditex has many more to go.
