The virtual day of CMT Events, «Innovations in Biobased & Recycled Textiles», was held on January 17, 2022.
|27.01.2022| The event revolved around a basic question: Can recycled textiles and bio-based materials be the key part of the solution for a sustainable fashion industry?
Fashion is the second most polluting industry on the planet and is responsible for 20% of the world's wastewater. The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and it is estimated that textile production alone releases 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere each year. In addition, Fast Fashion causes tons of clothing to be discarded annually, causing a great impact on the environment.
The growing awareness of the population in terms of sustainability makes consumers expect a change from the industry. Thus, the fashion segment is investing more and more in the search for sustainable materials, including recycled and bio-based products.
Given this scenario, many questions arise regarding textile sustainability that CMT Events tried to answer through the Innovations in Biobased & Recycled Textiles event, held on January 17, 2022.
Some of the questions that were addressed during the conference were the following:

Among the previously featured speakers, we can focus on Recover and Sylvia Calvo BCN, two Spanish companies.
The first of these is a family business from Alicante that was born within the Hilaturas Ferre group and is dedicated to the recycling of cotton fibers. Recover recycles pre- and post-consumer cotton waste. Its recycled fibers reduce the need to resort to new raw materials and -thanks to its Color Blend system- limits the use of new pigments. According to the Higg Material Sustainability Index, its recycled fiber is one of the textile materials with the lowest environmental impact in the world.
Sylvia Calvo BCN, for its part, is an ethical and circular fashion brand that works holistically on sustainability. Sylvia Calvo, the firm's founder, designs with the environment in mind; commitment to ecological materials, both organic and recycled; and produces its garments by hand. The main distinguishing feature of the brand is that its garments and accessories are characterized by being made from used coffee bags.
