The 10 countries with the most Covid-19 infections in the world
Cyril Ramaphosa, president of South Africa, announced a new closure of schools in the country -they partially reopened in June- due to the considerable increase in coronavirus cases.
"Taking into account the vision of various actors and expert organizations, the Government has decided that all public schools must take a break for the next four weeks," explained the president before noting that the centers will close on July 27 and reopen August 24th.
South Africa is one of the five countries with the most reported infections in the world, registering more than half of those detected in the entire African continent, with more than 422,000 cases. The total number of deaths from Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, is 6,343 people.
Public hospitals are overwhelmed as the number of patients increases and more than 5,000 medical workers are infected.
The struggles of Africa's most developed nation in coping with the pandemic are a worrying sign for others with far fewer resources across the region, as the spread of the virus continues to accelerate.
