On May 15, the traditional festival of its patron saint, San Isidro, is celebrated in Madrid. On this occasion, the children of Madrid will not be able to go to nurseries and schools with their chulapos costumes and their chulapas dresses, but they will be able to wear them on the streets. If you need to buy the most typical clothes of the capital, you still have time.
Madrileños still do not know under what circumstances they will celebrate this year the festivity of their patron saint, San Isidro, on May 15th. There are days left for the Government to announce which Spanish provinces will pass on May 11 to phase 1 of the de-escalation, which will allow meetings of up to 10 people on terraces and homes.
Whether Madrid passes to that stage of the long process of deconfinement that is coming or if it continues in the current phase zero, this May 15, 2020 the most traditional party in the capital will be celebrated as every year. But, in this case, without the traditional visit to the Saint's Prairie.
Madrid children, who celebrate San Isidro every year by going to kindergartens and schools dressed in their chulapo costume and their chulapa dress, will wear their caps and scarves on the streets on this occasion, filling them with joy and color ... what a great need. And they will, of course, at the time stipulated for them: from 12:00 to 19:00.
The terms chulapo and chulapa began to be used in Madrid at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century to highlight the castizo character of those Madrileños who had not embraced the Frenchified culture that a good part of the social elites did assume. The chulapos and chulapas were the most Madrileños from Madrid, residents of the Malasaña area.
The chulapos were rascally and cocky men, while the chulapas were cheerful ladies, who dedicated themselves to clothing, selling flowers, ironing or making cigars. They were very proud to be from Madrid and that was what their traditional clothing expressed, perfectly described by many of Goya's paintings and by the best-known zarzuelas of that time.
Beyond San Isidro, which is celebrated every May 15, many people from Madrid take advantage of other fairs and festivals in the capital to wear their typical costumes. These are the cases of the festivities of San Antonio de la Florida, in June, and of San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma, in August.
The traditional Madrid chulapo costume is made up of several elements. The most characteristic of all is the cap, which is usually dark and sometimes includes small squares. The carnation on the lapel is also essential, which is added to a white scarf around the neck, a vest or short jacket, black or dark pants and the typical ankle boots.
Much more colorful is the chulapa dress, which stands out for its colorful polka dots and for always being accompanied by the traditional Manila shawl and a white blouse at the waist. To this must be added a white handkerchief on the head, which is tied around the neck and adorned with two carnations. Of course, the hair must be collected in the form of a bow.
