WASHINGTON.- The head of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, warned the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, that a Russian aggression against Ukraine threatened global security and the economy.
“Secretary Blinken underscored the global security and economic risks posed by further Russian aggression against Ukraine and agreed that de-escalation and diplomacy are the responsible way to proceed,” said State Department spokesman Ned Price. after a call between both diplomatic leaders.
Close to Russia, the Asian giant has so far refrained from taking sides in this dispute between Moscow and Western countries, which accuse Putin of deploying 100,000 soldiers on the border with Ukraine for an eventual offensive.
But eight days before the Winter Games, which are usually accompanied by a “truce” in world conflicts, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his US counterpart and made a stand on the the Ukrainian question.
"Russia's reasonable security concerns must be taken seriously and resolved," Wang Yi said, calling on the parties to "completely abandon the Cold War mentality" and "refrain from escalating tension."
In the conversation, the representative of the Chinese regime also called on the United States to end "interference" in the Beijing Olympics, referring to the diplomatic boycott imposed by Washington and some of its allies.
The US has said it will not send officials to the Games, which start on February 4, to protest the detention of an estimated 1 million Uyghurs and other Muslims in northwest China's Xinjiang region, as well as for the repression of human rights in other parts of the country.
The call follows the appointment of veteran diplomat Nicholas Burns as the new US ambassador to China, a post that has been empty for a year. In the statement, Wang also called on Washington to withdraw its support for self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its territory.
Negotiations on Ukraine
In parallel, the Americans and NATO delivered two separate letters Wednesday to the Russians, demanding a written response to draft treaties proposed in December. The United States has "clearly made it known" that it upholds "the open door principle in NATO," Blinken declared. In other words, it cannot formally commit itself not to allow Ukraine to enter the Alliance.
It remains to be seen Russia's reaction to these two missives. "Nobody knows which way it will go," estimated Marie Dumoulin, of the European Council on Foreign Relations, assuring that it will be Putin's decision.
Washington on Wednesday said it expected a possible Russian attack by "mid-February," while a meeting of Russian and Ukrainian emissaries on the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine has led to a rare joint commitment to preserve the high the fire.
“There is every indication” that President Vladimir Putin “will use military force at some point, perhaps between now and mid-February,” US Assistant Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said.
The diplomat pointed out that the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing on February 4 could influence "their calendar" to avoid offending President Xi Jinping during this great event for China.
