Podiatrists warn that the use of clogs at work is not advisable and carries risks

VALENCIA, Jan. 29 (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Illustrious Official College of Podiatrists of the Valencian Community (ICOPCV) has warned that the use of clogs in the workplace can be detrimental to the health of the feet and the musculoskeletal system. Some of the risks associated with its regular use are ankle sprains, claw toes, hyperkeratosis or back pain, among other pathologies.

In a statement, podiatrists have explained that although it is a type of footwear widely used by health personnel, its use is not advisable due to the instability it confers, among other reasons.

"Clogs do not usually have adequate support and are open at the back. These characteristics cause the foot to dance and, therefore, trip. Due to this, they can generate sprains, chafing on the instep, claw toes, calluses on the metatarsal and heel area and back pain", explained Maite García, president of the Association.

For this reason, they recommend using closed, light, wide-toe shoes with buttresses, lace-up or Velcro closure, wide heels, with a maximum height of 3.5 centimeters, made of materials that do not allow liquids to penetrate, that are breathable and have a non-slip and antistatic sole.

According to García, the widespread use of clogs by health personnel has erroneously conveyed the message that it is healthy footwear and other professionals have incorporated it into their work activity, such as cooks, hairdressers or cleaning assistants. among other professions.

In addition, rubber clogs are not recommended either because they cause greater foot sweating. To promote ventilation, they have holes and put their users at risk by being inadvertently pricked by needles or other sharp elements or coming into contact with dangerous liquids if there is an accidental spill.

For these reasons, podiatrists have highlighted that in the development of any job, a shoe should be used that supports the foot well, allows its correct mobility by adapting to the footprint and efficiently cushions the impacts of the heel to avoid the most common injuries associated with the use of inadequate work shoes such as tired legs, muscle cramps, ankle sprains, claw toes, malleolar edema, plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, hyperhidrosis, calluses or corns.
